Proper Packaging: Your Questions Answered

Freight comes in different shapes and sizes each with their own packaging requirements. Your top priority is to get your freight delivered to your customer in the same condition as it left you. Proper packaging is the single most important factor in achieving this.

Why is proper packaging so important?

Because freight travels via road, rail, air, and sea, it encounters vibrations, bumps, and rough handling. Good packaging helps ensure your goods arrive in the same condition they left in. Damages can result in replacement costs, additional freight, delays, customer dissatisfaction, and disposal costs—not to mention the potential for injury to handlers from unstable or damaged freight.

What packaging types should I consider?

Here’s a quick guide:
  • Cartons: Keep loose items together, protect product displays, and work well with internal padding like foam.
  • Pallets: Great for stability. Ensure they’re in good condition, items are balanced, nothing hangs over the edge, and the top surface is flat.
  • Crates: Highly protective with solid walls. Best to use a professional crating company unless you’re experienced.
  • Shrink Wrap: Offers surface protection and load stability, prevents friction, and provides a surface for labels.
  • Banding/Strapping: Steel or plastic bands that keep pallets or bundles secure.
  • Labeling: Clearly communicate destination and handling instructions—e.g., “Fragile,” “This Way Up,” etc.

What environmental factors affect packaging?
  • Depot environment: Trucks, forklifts, and rails can emit diesel dust—shrink wrap helps shield your freight.
  • Road conditions: Potholes, winding roads, and weather demand stability in packaging.
  • Display packaging: Additional protection helps maintain presentation quality for retail.
  • Label visibility: Ensure labels stand out and aren’t stuck directly on product surfaces to avoid damage upon removal.
  • Maximizing space: Freight cost is based on volume (cubed measurement), so avoid protruding parts.

What are common packaging mistakes to avoid?
  • Used materials: Recycled cartons or polystyrene lose strength and offer poor protection. Even pallets and crates should be inspected for damage.
  • Relying solely on wrapping: Shrink wrap alone won’t protect against vibration, crushing, or impact.
  • Insufficient cushioning: Don’t leave large gaps—use compressible fillers such as airbags or foam to safeguard goods.

How can I improve my packaging?

Review your current practices and consider tweaks. Talk to your freight forwarder—they often have useful suggestions or tools. Packaging well saves money, prevents injury, and delivers on Mainfreight’s promise: deliver on time, complete, and damage-free.
