Introducing the zero-emission factor

Zero-Emission Zones in the Netherlands: What They Mean for Your Logistics

Since January 1, 2025, many Dutch municipalities have introduced zero-emission zones (ZE-zones) to improve air quality and reduce harmful emissions in urban areas. This transition to sustainable transport is both necessary and inevitable. However, these changes also impact logistics costs—not due to profit, but as a result of government policy.

Zero-emission zones are designed to create cleaner cities and support the shift toward environmentally friendly transport. For logistics providers and businesses, this means adapting operations to comply with new regulations. At Mainfreight, we believe in working together with our customers to build a sustainable future. Introducing zero-emission vehicles requires significant investment in technology, infrastructure, and operational adjustments.

To enable this transition and maintain service continuity, Mainfreight will introduce a Zero-Emission Factor starting January 1, 2026. This surcharge applies to all shipments within current and announced zero-emission zones. For detailed postal codes included in these zones, please refer to the official Dutch government website.
