Marpol Measures 2015
On the 1st of January 2015, the new SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Areas) EU Sulphur Emissions Directive came into force. Given that this has huge consequences for the transport sector, active in the English Channel, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, we would like to update you with regard to these developments.
EU Sulphur Emissions Directive
On 01.01.2015, the new SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Areas) EU Sulphur Emissions Directive comes into force. The background to this new European legislation is an amendment to the so-called Marpol treaty that regulates maximum emissions of sulphurous vapour during the combustion of gasoline. This amendment means that the permissible emission of sulphurous vapour is dramatically reduced from 1% to 0.1%.
The shipping companies that transport our trailers have implemented changes in order to fulfil the Marpol treaty that is why our shipping cost have risen. In order for these lanes to remain viable, Mainfreight is forced to implement an Marpol surcharge for shipments to and from Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
In the attachment you will find the surcharges that will be of immediate effect. Our intention is to provide these as a separate line on your invoice.
We realize that this is a significant increase and unfortunately it is beyond our control. We appreciate your understanding during this time.
