Who we are
Mainfreight is in the business of global supply chain logistics. Put simply, we partner with our customers to provide qualitative end-to-end freight services including warehousing, domestic and international distribution as well as worldwide air and ocean freight services. With teams and branches spanning Europe, Australia, Asia, New Zealand, and the Americas, we keep actively broadening our global presence. Additionally, as a publicly listed company on the New Zealand Stock Exchange, we persistently strive toward realising our 100-year vision.
Established in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1978, Mainfreight quickly developed into the country's most extensive freight network. A significant shift took place in 1984 with the opening of the first Mainfreight Air & Ocean branch. Briefly after, Mainfreight expanded to Australia in 1989: driven by the vision of treating New Zealand and Australia as a unified market. During this time, Mainfreight's presence in Australia witnessed substantial growth through a combination of acquisitions and the establishment of branches in key locations.
The year 1999 marked a significant milestone as Mainfreight went global with acquisitions in Asia and the United States. Full ownership of Asian operations was achieved in 2007, resulting in the establishment of multiple branches in China, southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. Simultaneously, expansion in the United States continued with the acquisition of Target Logistics Services in 2007, solidifying Mainfreight USA's comprehensive services across the supply chain.
In 2011, Mainfreight achieved a significant milestone by acquiring the business of Wim Bosman Group, a move that presented compelling opportunities for the expansion of Mainfreight's global supply chain network within Europe. Today, Mainfreight is present in 27 countries, with more than 330 branches worldwide, and a strong team of over 10,800 dedicated team members.
At the core of Mainfreight is the guiding principle of "Special people, Special company," which not only defines our unique culture but has also proven successful on a global scale, extending far beyond its origins in New Zealand. We have our 100-year vision, influencing decisions from recruitment and training to customer and supplier relationships, growth strategies, and legal and tax structures. This long-term perspective underscores Mainfreight's commitment to being a lasting and impactful presence in the world of global supply chain. Additionally, we promote our people from within, and encourage innovative, non-hierarchical and decisive outlooks. Our team regard each other as a family and share mealtimes.
