Metro Auckland on the Move

Mainfreight Metro Auckland and Owens Metro Auckland will be moving into a new facility over the next month (Jul-Aug 2014).  This site in Victoria Street, Onehunga will provide excellent operational efficiencies for the two Auckland metro freight services. The two brands will continue to operate separate fleets but will be sharing an office so it was a prime opportunity to bring the teams together for a bit of team bonding. The main goal behind this was to get both Metro teams thinking to the same page prior to the move.

Challenge is on!

Darren Turner, branch manager of Mainfreight Metro contacted the team at Corporate Challenge Events to see what options they had. Corporate Challenge NZ has over 20 different team building events but only one really stood out as something the Metro teams would love to be a part of. “Bikes for Tykes” is an event with several parts and challenges. Teams were formed based on roles within the branch so everyone could get to know their new work mates. Each team needed to complete different tasks to win bike parts. Once all parts were collected they then completed the challenge by building a bike.

What Happpens to the Bikes?

The bikes passed their final inspection and the winners were presented with their prizes. Then three young children from Heart Kids NZ (a charity that supports Kiwi children and families affeted by Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)), were bought out and given the bikes to take home. Jaws dropped and tears shed as the team gave their bikes to these very deserving children.

Darren Turner comments – “I was worried leading up to the event as this kind of thing was way out of the comfort zone for most in the team. That fear was gone as soon as we arrived and everyone gave it their all. I believe we achieved our goal for the day very quickly and new friendships started. I could not be happier with the result.”
