Mainfreight opens new Transport Facility in Brisbane
Faster freight flow through a purpose-built cross-dock
Spanning 6.5 hectares, the site has been developed around a modern cross-dock model that challenges the traditional approach of building larger, increasingly inefficient depots. As freight volumes grow, bigger facilities can create longer forklift travel distances, slower processing times, and later departure schedules. The Willawong facility addresses these challenges by bringing freight closer to where it needs to go, reducing unnecessary movement and improving operational flow.
Unlike traditional transport depots where freight may be unloaded, stored, and handled multiple times, the Willawong facility is designed to move freight directly from inbound pick-up and delivery vehicles to outbound linehaul trailers. This streamlined approach reduces double handling and allows freight to move through the depot faster and more efficiently.

A purpose-built cross-dock model
Brisbane Transport has been designed around a hybrid dock configuration, combining rear-load operations on one side and side-loading capabilities on the other. This allows the operation to efficiently manage both curtain-sided vehicles used for local deliveries and hard-sided trailers used for linehaul movements. The result is a more streamlined operation that maximises freight flow while supporting a wide range of transport requirements across the network.
Built for the future of transport
The new facility strengthens Mainfreight's transport network by combining innovative design, advanced technology, and sustainable infrastructure in one purpose-built operation. By reducing handling, improving freight flow, and creating additional capacity for future growth, the site is helping deliver faster, safer, and more reliable transport solutions for customers across Australia.
Capacity for growth
The facility includes a 15,298m² building footprint, 54 B-double parking bays, and extensive hardstand areas designed to support increasing freight volumes and future growth. Its layout improves vehicle flow around the site, allowing trailers to be positioned and exchanged efficiently while reducing congestion during peak operating periods. As freight volumes continue to grow, the facility provides the flexibility and scalability needed to support customer demand.
Designed to reduce damage and improve accuracy
Reducing double handling not only improves efficiency but also helps minimise the potential for freight damage. The facility's rear-load dock design provides improved loading quality and creates a more controlled freight handling environment.
Faster and more efficient freight handling
The cross-dock design allows freight to move directly between vehicles rather than being staged on the warehouse floor. This reduces handling requirements, improves loading efficiency, and helps accelerate freight movement through the network. By positioning local pick-up and delivery vehicles closer to their corresponding linehaul trailers, freight can be transferred with fewer movements, reducing processing times and supporting faster departures.
Sustainability initiatives
Sustainability has been incorporated throughout the site, including a 1MW solar system supported by 2MWh battery storage, helping power daily operations more efficiently. The facility also features electric vehicle charging infrastructure, including chargers for cars and heavy vehicles, alongside 600,000 litres of rainwater storage used for truck washing, irrigation, and site water treatment. Additional initiatives, including on-site vegetable gardens and water-recycling systems, contribute to the site's long-term sustainability goals.
